Broken Bracket or Poking Wire?

Breaking brackets and poking wires can be part of the process, but we want to avoid it as much as possible. As your bite changes, some brackets may get in the way and come off during chewing or wires may start to poke in the back while we close some space. Usually, it does not require a extra visit and can be addressed at your next scheduled appointment. Wax can be placed on the bracket or poking wire to avoid any irritation - see video. Wires can be adjusted at home also - see video.

My next aligner doesn’t fit or I lost it - what do I do?

Occasionally, an aligner will get thrown away or it won’t fit. We recommend going ahead and trying in the next aligner in your set. It may be tight, but if it seats all the way, continue with that aligner and wear as prescribed by Dr. Bates. If it does not seat, do not force it. Call our office for assistance.

Do I really have to wear my rubber bands?

YES! Elastics are very important when it comes to correcting a mismatch in your bite, like an overbite or underbite. Always wear your rubber bands as Dr. Bates prescribed. If you run out, let us know and we’ll provide you more!

Do I really have to wear my retainer when I’m done?

Your retainer is your insurance policy. Wearing your retainer protects the time and financial investment you made to obtain that picture perfect smile. Without a retainer, you will likely experience some shifting, or relapse, and will need to undergo limited treatment to restore your smile. We will follow you for up to two years after your active treatment is complete to monitor your retention.
